~Emperor Ashoka~
The bowl is a wonderful piece that has two equally magnificent aspects to it. The Emperor Ashoka Pillar for a lid and the bowl with 6 scenes from the Buddha's life in bas relief. The 6 scenes are Siddartha's birth. Siddartha leaving his home with his friend, Govinda. Siddartha cutting of his princely long hair. Siddartha meditating. Siddartha gaining enlightenment and becoming the Buddha shown in the earth touching gesture. Then finally the Buddha dying.
Emperor Ashoka the Great was the ruler of the Maurya Empire from 273 BC to 232 BC. After a number of military conquests, Ashoka reigned over most of South Asia and beyond, from present-day Afghanistan and parts of Persia in the west, to Bengal and Assam in the east, and as far south as Mysore. A follower of Buddhism, Ashoka established monuments marking several significant sites in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, and according to Buddhist tradition was closely involved in the preservation and transmission of Buddhism.
The Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath is the most popular of the relics left by Ashoka. Made of sandstone, this pillar records the visit of the emperor to Sarnath, in the 3rd century BC. It has a four-lion capital (four lions standing back to back) which was adopted as the emblem of the modern Indian republic. The lion symbolizes both Asoka's imperial rule and the kingship of the Buddha.
