This earth touching, bhumisparsha mudra Buddha is stunning!  It has the presence where you can immediately see that you are standing in front of a master work.  The base is wider than most giving it an immediate presence that you can feel.  The casting is perfect with no imperfections.  The face and hair are classic examples of Sukhothai style with the sea shell shaped curly hair, the long earlobes, slight smile and a crooked nose.  Even the flame arising from the top of the Buddhas head fits the piece perfectly.  The sculpture is covered in a layer of beautiful antique real gold leaf.  In temples throughout Thailand, Buddha statues are covered with gold leaf by devotees who put the gold leaf on the statue as a way to gain merit.  This Buddha statue belongs in a temple!

The Sukhothai style is the most popular style associated with Lord Buddha in Thailand. It is a classic representation of the Buddha.
There are three main aspects that can immediately identify the Sukhothai period of sculpture:
1.  A flame shaped finial emerging top of the head of the Buddha.
2.  A hooked nose, high curving highbrows, and long stretched earlobes from wearing heavy earrings from his princely youth.
3.  A head full of tight curls, which look like snails shells.

About the Bhumisparsha Mudra:  The Buddha is sitting in the Earth Touching, Calling the Earth to Witness, or The victory over Mara position. He sits with folded legs (right on top of the left). The left hand is held in his lap with the palm facing upward. The right hand extends over the right thigh, near the knee, with the fingers pointing towards the ground, palm inward. During meditation, Siddartha was subjected to many temptations but none as terrible as those posed by the evil Mara, who bombards him with his demon armies, monsters, beasts and violent storms and his three lascivious daughters. The Buddha remains steadfast. Then to testify to Mara of his meritorious past, he points to the earth with his hand and calls forth Thorani, the beautiful earth goddess. She rises from the ground and wrings the water from her long, black hair, which raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons.

I always say to our customers; The sculpture chooses you, you do not choose the sculpture.

 ~ Buddha~
The Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism, the religion and the philosophical system that produced a great culture throughout much of southern and eastern Asia.  Buddha, meaning "awakened one" or "enlightened one" is a title not a name.  In Hindu Dogma, the Buddha is viewed as being the 9th avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.
The Buddha was a son of the rulers Sakyas.  He was married at the age of 16 and lived in luxury and comfort sheltered from the harsh realities of life.  When he was 29 he realized that men are subject to old age, sickness and death.  He became aware of the suffering inherent in existence.  He resolved to give up princely life and become a wandering ascetic (samana) in search for the Truth.
With the two of samanas he attained mystical states of elevated consciousness but he failed to find the Truth.  He continued his search and was joined by five ascetics in a grove near Uruvela, where he practiced sever austerities and self-mortification for six years.  When he fainted away in weakness, he abandoned ascetic practices to seek his own path to Enlightenment.  Discarding the teachings of his contemporaries, through meditation he achieved Enlightenment, or ultimate understanding.  There after the Buddha instructed his followers in the dharma (truth) and the "Middle Way" a path between worldly life and extremes of self-denial.
The essence of the Buddha's early preaching was said to be the four Noble truths: 1) life is fundamentally disappointment and suffering.  2) suffering is a result of one's desires for pleasure, power, and continued existence; 3) to stop disappointment and suffering on must stop desiring; and 4) the way to stop desiring and thus suffering is the Noble eight fold path - right views, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right awareness and right concentration.  The realization of the truth of anatman (no eternal self) was taught as essential for the indescribable state of release called nirvana.

Brass statues from Thailand do not need much maintenance. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor use.

You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup. If you are really interested in making the statue shine you can use some natural oil, like coconut oil or olive oil, and a cotton rag to wipe down the metal portions of the piece. You can use a toothbrush as well to get into the small crevices of the statue like the hands and hair.

Thai brass's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate. The metal can stand up to the harshest conditions of heat and bitter cold. We suggest you bathe the sculpture every couple of months so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture and then use a cotton cloth with some natural oil to give the statue a shine.
