  • The Hindu God Kubera is the Lord of Wealth and King to the Yakshas who are natures spirits and is depicted with a plump belly and holds a conch and a discuss which are two symbols usually associated with Lord Vishnu
  • There are two knobs on the top and one knob on the bottom of the wood panel that were used to fit it into the South Indian temple chariot that it is made for
  • Vishnu and Kubera are famously linked together in the story of Kubera loaning Vishnu a huge sum of money so that Vishnu could marry Padmavathi (read the story in the description below)
  • The wood of the panel is very distressed showing its age
  • This wood panel from a temple chariot is both very old and very rare as we have never seen a piece available in the market and is completely one of a kind
The story of Vishnu and Kubera:  The Hindu Goddess Lakshmi and wife of Lord Vishnu had a fight with Lord Vishnu and left their heavenly abode of Vaikunta. She came and settled on earth in disguise. Lord Vishnu soon arrived on earth searching for lost wife. He failed to find her and instead settled on Tirumala hills in the form of a forest gatherer and continued the search. During the search, Lord Vishnu met a beautiful girl named Padmavati who was the daughter of the King of the seven hills in Tirumala. They both fell in love and decided to get married. The father of Padmavati asked for a huge bridal price and to pay the money Lord Vishnu took a large loan from Kubera, the Hindu god who is the treasurer of wealth. Kubera gave the loan on the condition that Vishnu cannot return to Vaikunta without paying off the debt. Lord Vishnu resides at Tirumala as Tirupati Venkateswara without returning to Vaikunta until the payment is made. To help him repay his debt, devotees offer him wealth and in return Lord Vishnu fulfills their prayers.

Panel carvings from a present day Wooden Temple Chariot - Pondicherry, India, 2022
I always say to our customers; The sculpture chooses you, you do not choose the sculpture.
You just know when you find the right piece to bring into your home and into your heart.
- Kyle Tortora, Founder of Lotus Sculpture
The use of a wood polish will keep the wood looking fresh and the colors vibrant.

Wood statues are easy to take care of as they just need some annual upkeep to keep them looking as they did when they were first carved. All the wood used by Lotus Sculpure's artists is dried out for months. Moisture causes cracks in the sculpture as the wood contracts and expands in different temperatures. Our wood has little to no moisture in it assuring that the sculpture is not going to crack in its journey into different climates. Here are some simple tips to keep your statue in good condition:

  • Dust the statue as needed to prevent dirt build up
  • To make the statue shine use a natural wood cleaner and a cotton cloth to buff the sculpture

We prefer Old English to polish and buff our statues. The use of a wood polish like Old English will keep the wood looking fresh and keep the colors looking vibrant. For natural wood and painted wooden statues we recommend Old English for lighter woods. For darker wood statues we recommend Old English for darker woods. Lotus Sculpture cleans and polishes each wooden statue prior to shipping them to the customer.

We recommend keeping wooden statues in an indoor environment. Wood statues can go outside however, they will wear more quickly and develop an antique appearance. If you would like to put a wood statue from Lotus Sculpture outside and keep the same appearance of the sculpture we would recommend first coating the statue with a couple of layers of sealant or polyurethane. We would then recommend placing the statue in a partially covered area. The more exposure to the elements the more the statue will wear over time. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your wooden statue from Lotus Sculpture, (760) 994-4455 or [email protected].
