The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Hinduism, Buddhism and yogic tradition. A mala is a string of 108 beads with one bead as the summit or head bead called a sumeru. Malas are used for keeping count while chanting or mentally reciting a mantra or deities name. This practice in Sanskrit is known as japa. Malas create beautiful necklaces, and can also be looped multiple times around your wrist. It is believed that when malas are used regularly for meditation and repeating mantras, they absorb the vibrations of the practice and reflect back positive energy.

- The diameter of the sun is 108 times the earth.
