Avalokiteshvara is seated in the padmasana or lotus position. This is the leg position of deep meditation. He has 4 hands of which hold a conch shell, lotus flower and prayer malas. He has a beautiful crown and ornate, circular earrings. In the Buddhist pantheon, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara is revered as the personification of compassion. Avalokiteshvara may be the most popular of all Buddhist deities, with the exception of Lord Buddha himself -- he is beloved throughout the Buddhist world. The Dalai Lamas and Karmapas are believed to be emanations of Avalokiteshvara. The Tibetan name for Avalokiteshvara is Chenrzig.
