The bronze dancing Shiva as Lord Nataraja is the most recognizable form of Shiva and perhaps of all the Hindu gods in the vast Hindu pantheon. The
Nataraja has perfect balance and proportions which are the key to a
fine Nataraja sculpture. He looks light as a feather as he dances on the dwarf of ignorance, Apasmara. The arch or prahbhamandala surrounding Shiva is carved with swirling decorations. One can often see the love that goes into the making of a sculpture by the details of the hands and the feet. Both are exquisite on this Nataraja. They have all the natural creases of a hand or foot each adorned with multiple toe rings and rings.
The significance of the Nataraja sculpture is said to be that Shiva is shown as the source of all movement within the cosmos. The cosmos is represented by the arch of flames or prahabhamandala. The purpose of the dance is to release men from illusion of the idea of the "self" and of the physical world. The cosmic dance was performed in Chidambaram in South India, called the center of the universe by some Hindus. The gestures of the dance represent Shiva's five activities, creation (symbolized by the drum), protection (by the "fear not" hand gesture), destruction (by the fire), embodiment (by the foot planted on the dwarf), and release (by the foot held aloft).
