- This enormous Ganesha statue is holding an elephant goad, noose, a water vessel that his trunk is playfully drinking from and his broken tusk that he used to pen the Mahabharata epic with a cobra that is going across his chest as well as a beautiful carving of Mahakala or "great time" on the back of the sculpture

This stunning garden Ganesh statue is seated with his legs tucked under his body and his feet touching in the front. He wears brocade leggings for pants. He holds an elephant goad, a noose and his broken tusk that he used to write the Mahabharata epic. His trunk is sipping water from a water vessel in his left hand. His trunk is long and large and is the main feature of the sculpture. Ganesh has a cobra brahmin's thread across his chest. A brahmin's thread is a thread of rope that the brahmin caste in India wears to denote their status so they can perform rituals within the temple. The cobra's head is twisted where it ends to the left of Ganesha's face. The most unique feature of this beautiful Ganesh is the amazing carving of Mahakala or "great time" on the backside of Ganesha's halo. Mahakala is known as the devourer because in the end time destroys everything. Truly a wonderful Ganesh perfect for bringing the obstacle removing energy of Ganesh into any outdoor setting!
The chubby, gentle, wise, elephant-headed Ganesh, or Ganesha, is one of Hinduisms most popular deities. He is the remover of obstacles, the deity whom worshippers first acknowledge when they visit a temple. He is also patron of letters and of learning; he is the legendary scribe who, using his broken tusk, which he often holds, wrote down parts of the Mahabharata epic. Ganesh is usually depicted colored red; he is pot bellied, has one tusk broken, and has four arms that may hold a pasam, a goad, and a pot of rice or sweetmeats. The sweet meats are held in a type of bowl known as a laddus. His appetite for these sweets is legendary and offerings of them are often left at his shrine.
Statues of Ganesh can be found in most Indian towns. His image is placed where new houses are to be built; he is honored at the start of a journey or business venture, and poets traditionally invoke him at the start of a book.
A pasam is a triple twine weapon. Each of the three twines represents, arrogance and conceit, Maya - the illusory nature of the real world, ignorance. In Hindu ideology weapons are a viewed as symbolic tools to destroy the ego rather than to cause any type of bloodshed. Goads (or elephant prods) are typically used to direct elephants. Goads are symbolic of how one should steer the soul away from the ignorance and illusions of this earthly world just as a mahout would steer an elephant away from any treacherous path.
In my emails to the artists I told them how beautiful the Ganesh was. I thought it was their best yet! They reponded that the raw stone was a beautiful piece of stone and that they had a "good mood and feeling" while carving it. The good vibes certainly came out in the end in this beautiful Ganesh sculpture!

About Lava Stone: The lava stone used for our sculptures was quarried in the volcanic mountains of Indonesia. The lava stone is a solid stone that is perfect for any type of location and weather conditions, hot or cold, wet or dry. The stone is versatile in that it can be colored in a wide spectrum of colors. It can also be polished or unpolished giving giving it a clean or rough feel. In humid conditions if it is left untouched it takes on a very mysterious, antique, worn look like you would see in the temple ruins of south east Asia.

Lava stone statues from Bali do not need much maintenance. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor use.
You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Lava stone's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate. The stone can stand up to the harshest conditions of heat and bitter cold. We suggest you bathe the sculpture at least once a year so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture. This will maintain the sculpture for your grandchildren and then their grandchildren!
