A beautiful bust of lord Buddha. The Buddha has a large bump of knowledge or ushnishna on his head. This symbolizes spiritual wisdom and a fully-developed top chakra. Chakras are believed to be centers of the body which a person can collect energy. This bump is covered with spiral, sea shell shaped curls of hair that symbolize enlightenment. The Buddha has a circular shaped urna or third eye placed prominently on his forehead. The 3rd eye is symbolic of the Buddha being able to see the true nature of reality. His eyes are downcast in concentration perhaps looking inward in meditation. His earlobes are long and stretched from his youth as a prince when he wore heavy gold earrings. His smile is abundant and serene.
Why the Buddha has cowrie shell curls on his head: During a very hot summer the Buddha in fear of suffering from severe sunstroke. Seeing the Buddha in desperate need of help, the group of snails crept onto the Buddha's head thus shielding him from sunstroke. They gave up their lives to protect him. As a token of gratitude the Buddha wore their shells on his head for the rest of his life.

Brass statues from Bali, Indonesia do not need much maintenance. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. Bali brass is meant only to be used indoors.
You can use a natural oil, like coconut oil or olive oil and a cotton cloth to periodically wipe down the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
If you are really interested in making the statue shine you can use some natural oil, like coconut oil or olive oil, and a cotton rag to wipe down the metal portions of the piece. You can use a toothbrush as well to get into the small crevices of the statue like the hands and hair. This will not remove any of the natural patina on the statue.
