- Foo dogs are not actually dogs at all, but lions who are also called Shishi which are meant to guard gates to keep evil forces from entering a temple or home
- The statues are sold as a set of 2 statues, male on the left holding a globe beneath his foot and a female with her paw on the back of a lion on the right representing the opposing forces of yin and yang
- There is a ball carved within the mouth of each Foo Dog that can move around within its mouth
- Each Foo Dog is hand carved from one block of green lava stone and perfect for the outdoors, the statues pictured are not the exact pieces you will receive, they are carved by the same artist in the same size, we can send a picture on your request
Chinese guardian lions are known as Shishi or in the West, Foo Dogs. They are not dogs at all but lions. They are iconic images of pre-modern China and have traditionally stood outside imperial palaces and the wealthy. They are believed to have powerful protective benefits. They are always displayed as a pair with a male and female lion. The male is shown on the left and the female on the right. This is a manifestation of yin and yang, the female representing yin and the male yang. According to feng shui, correct placement of the lions is important to ensure their beneficial effect. When looking out of a building through the entrance to be guarded, looking in the same direction as the lions, the male is placed on the left and the female on the right. When looking at the entrance from outside the building, facing the lions, the male lion is on the right, and the female is on the left.
About Lava Stone: The lava stone used for our sculptures was quarried in the volcanic mountains of Indonesia. The lava stone is a solid stone that is perfect for any type of location and weather conditions, hot or cold, wet or dry. The stone is versatile in that it can be colored in a wide spectrum of colors. It can also be polished or unpolished giving giving it a clean or rough feel. In humid conditions if it is left untouched it takes on a very mysterious, antique, worn look like you would see in the temple ruins of south east Asia.

Lava stone statues from Bali do not need much maintenance. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor use.
You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Lava stone's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate. The stone can stand up to the harshest conditions of heat and bitter cold. We suggest you bathe the sculpture at least once a year so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture. This will maintain the sculpture for your grandchildren and then their grandchildren!
