- An absolutely stunning work of sculpture hand carved by a master wood artisan from the contours of a tree and root system of a crocodile wood tree, a one a kind, never to be replicated, Masterpiece!
- The sculpture depicts the Bodhitsattva Kwan Yin standing amidst a lush bamboo canopy above her head as she is pouring out the nectar of life from a vase with her other hand in the vitarka mudra of discussion & debate
- Carved into the natural contours of the root system are 3 dragons as well as her two child alcolytes; Long Nue, holding a gold ingot and Shan Tsai in the anjali mudra or namaste hand position both resting on lotus flower bases
- To the right of Kwan Yin's beatufiul face is an eagle with its wings outstretched and it's tail touching the tail of a dragon that flows up the rear of the statue from the base
Kwan Yin's expression captures a unique look of serenity one would look for from the Goddess of Compassion. Her features are long and slender with a beautiful nose and lips adorned with a slight smile. Her eyes are downcast and introspective. Her hair is put up in a bun on her head framed by a beautifully carved halo. There is an eagle to the left of her face with its wings outstretched and its tail touching the ends of a dragon tail that goes up the rear of the statue. On the base there are three dragons as well as Kwan Yin's alcolytes; Lung Nue and Shan Tsai. Lung Nue and Shan Tsai are both seated on lotus bases with Lung Nue holding a gold ingot and Shan Tsai in the anjali mudra or namaste hand position.
Below is a story of Kwan Yin's association with the Dragon King.
Kwan Yin and the Dragon King:
As a reward for Guan Yin's help saving his son, the Dragon King sent his daughter, a girl called Lung Nue ("dragon girl"), to present to Guan Yin the Pearl of Light. The Pearl of Light was a precious jewel owned by the Dragon King that constantly shone. Lung Nue, overwhelmed by the presence of Guan Yin, asked to be her disciple so that she might study the Buddha Dharma. Guan Yin accepted her offer with just one request: that Lung Nue be the new owner of the Pearl of Light. Lung Nue and Shan Tsai are often seen alongside Guan Yin as two children. Lung Nue is seen either holding a bowl or an ingot, which represents the Pearl of Light, whereas Shan Tsai is seen with palms joined and knees slightly bent to show that he was once crippled.
Kwan Yin (also spelled Kuan Yin, Quan Yin or Guan Yin), is known as the Goddess of Compassion, and she is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her name in Chinese roughly translates to "The One Who hears the Cries of the World". Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokiteshvara, the Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion. As a Bodhisattva, she has chosen to put off her complete, unexcelled, perfect enlightenment for the benefit of beings everywhere, and will wait as long as there is one being who is not enlightened.
Wood statues are easy to take care of as they just need some annual upkeep to keep them looking as they did when they were first carved. All the wood used by Lotus Sculpure's artists is dried out for months. Moisture causes cracks in the sculpture as the wood contracts and expands in different temperatures. Our wood has little to no moisture in it assuring that the sculpture is not going to crack in its journey into different climates. Here are some simple tips to keep your statue in good condition:
- Dust the statue as needed to prevent dirt build up
- To make the statue shine use a natural wood cleaner and a cotton cloth to buff the sculpture
We prefer Old English to polish and buff our statues. The use of a wood polish like Old English will keep the wood looking fresh and keep the colors looking vibrant. For natural wood and painted wooden statues we recommend Old English for lighter woods. For darker wood statues we recommend Old English for darker woods. Lotus Sculpture cleans and polishes each wooden statue prior to shipping them to the customer.
We recommend keeping wooden statues in an indoor environment. Wood statues can go outside however, they will wear more quickly and develop an antique appearance. If you would like to put a wood statue from Lotus Sculpture outside and keep the same appearance of the sculpture we would recommend first coating the statue with a couple of layers of sealant or polyurethane. We would then recommend placing the statue in a partially covered area. The more exposure to the elements the more the statue will wear over time. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your wooden statue from Lotus Sculpture, (760) 994-4455 or [email protected].

For placing the statue our customers have either placed the statue themselves with help of a friend and a tool like a hand truck or a dolly. Or by contacting their landscaper who is used to moving large and heavy objects like rocks and trees into place. For much larger and heavier sculptures sometimes the customer needs a piece of heavy equipment for placing the statue like a crane or forklift.
