Meet Meenakshi our Mala maker! Meenakshi is a 35 year old mother of 2 boys. She has been stringing malas for 10 years. She enjoys her work because she works in her home in Rishikesh. This allows her to work and take care of her 2 children while also helping provide for her family.
Whenever I meet women who are working in India it fills me with joy. Men are typically the workers and bread winner of the household. When women are working it gives them more power at home and puts them on the path to true social equality. Knowing that Lotus Sculpture is in some way helping this trend makes me feel good about what we are doing.
Chakras Explained: Chakras are collections of energy that exist within the body. Chakras store the energy of thoughts, feelings, memories, experiences, and actions and are responsible for our physical and emotional well being. The lower chakras are related to earthly matters such as survival, sex, and power. The top three chakras are related to higher consciousness, truth, intuition, and purpose. In the middle, the heart chakra bridges the two worlds with empathy, love, and compassion. It is important to develop a connection to your chakras and keep the energy within your body flowing smoothly.
Crown Chakra: Stone Amethyst (purple). Located at the top of the head. It is considered the chakra of enlightenment and represents our connection to our lifes purpose and spirituality.
Third Eye Chakra: Stone Lapiz Lazuli (dark blue). Located in the head. Blockages can manifest as headaches. When open and in alignment people will follow their intuition with a clear purpose and not second guess themselves.
Throat Chakra: Stone Blue Topaz (light blue). Located in the throat. It symbolizes self-expression, communication. When in alignment, you will speak and listen with compassion and feel confident when you speak because you know you are being true to yourself with your words.
Heart Chakra: Stone Peridot (green). Located just above the heart. It symbolizes relating, integration, compassion. It represents our ability to love and connect to others. When out of alignment, it can make us feel lonely, insecure, and isolated.

Sacral Chakra: Stone Carnelian (orange). Located just below the belly button. It is associated with emotions, creativity, sexuality. Emotionally, this chakra is connected to our feelings of self-worth, and even more specifically, our self-worth around pleasure, sexuality, and creativity.
Root Chakra: Stone Garnet (red). It is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with grounding, nourishment from the Earth's energy. When it is in alignment and open, we will feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally.
Sacral Chakra: Stone Carnelian (orange). Located just below the belly button. It is associated with emotions, creativity, sexuality. Emotionally, this chakra is connected to our feelings of self-worth, and even more specifically, our self-worth around pleasure, sexuality, and creativity.
Root Chakra: Stone Garnet (red). It is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with grounding, nourishment from the Earth's energy. When it is in alignment and open, we will feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally.
Significance of 108 Mala beads: In one minute, one breathes in approximately 15 times, in 1 hour 900 times, and in 12 hours 10800 times, and in a day 10800 times 2. A day consists of 24 hours, and if we set aside half the day for sleep and errands, then one can spend 12 hours for recitation of a mantra. The maximum number of times that one can recite ones mantra during one day is 10800 times. If one wants to obtain 100% benefit of its full mantra, then performing a mantra 108 times will give you the full benefit of the mantra. That's why in a "Mala", there are 108 beads. It is written in Vedas, that 1 Jaap corresponds to 1 mala (which has 108 beads), therefore performing jaap of 108 malas will result in 100% benefit. Mantras can be spoken out loud, underones breath or in ones head so it is possible to go through ones day with the mantra contiuously spinning in ones mind.
