Materials: 19th Century Antique Brass Made in Thailand
Total Height Including Base: 4 inches or 10 cms
Base Width & Depth: 3.5 x 1.5 inches

- He is seated in the ardhapadmasana or half lotus pose with his right leg over his left
- The Buddha is cast separately from the base as you can tell by the slight difference in color between the Buddha and the base
- This antique Buddha is being sold from the personal collection of Matthew Friedman, it was purchased from an antique dealer in Bangkok, Thailand between 1999-2001 when he worked for USAID in neighboring Dhaka, Bangladesh
This antique Thai Buddha sits on an elevated throne. He is the Dhyana mudra of meditation. It is the mudra of meditation, of concentration on the Good law and of the attainment of spiritual perfection. According to tradition, this mudra derives from lord Buddha when he was meditating under the pipal tree before his Enlightenment. This gesture was also used by yogis during their meditation and concentration exercises. It indicates the perfect balance of thought, rest of the senses, and tranquility.
This statue is from the private collection of Matthew Friedman. Matthew has lived and worked in Asia for the past twenty five years. During this period, he was posted as a diplomat for the US Government (USAID) and the United Nations in Nepal, Bangladesh and Thailand. Friedman has written three books related to Asian art: one book on traditional metal casting techniques in Bangladesh, and two books profiling traditional brass and bronze antiques from Nepal. Over a twenty year period, Friedman has amassed a large collective of brass and bronze items from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Laos. Friedman periodically presents at museum and art society events on the topic of how the lost wax method is used to make traditional Buddhist and Hindu statues. This statue was purchased from antique dealers in Dhaka, Bangladesh where Matthew was the head of USAID.
